01
Softwood and hardwood compared
Most garden decks in the UK use pressure-treated softwood, usually pine or spruce. It’s the cheaper of the two and easy to cut to awkward shapes. Hardwoods such as balau or iroko are denser and darker, and cost noticeably more. Either can look good on a red brick terrace. The choice usually comes down to budget, how much shade the garden gets, and how much time you’re happy to spend on upkeep.
02
Keeping a wooden deck in good order
Timber needs some attention to stay at its best, especially in gardens that stay damp in winter. A wash in spring, an oil or stain when the colour fades, and clearing leaves from the gaps between boards all help. Grooved boards and a slight fall away from the house help water run off. Ask about grip and drainage when you describe your garden, particularly for decks in a shaded corner.
03
The frame underneath
The part nobody sees matters most. Joists, posts and the ground beneath them decide how long a timber deck stays level and firm. A weed membrane, good airflow below the boards and joists at sensible spacings all count. A written quote should say what the frame is made of and how it sits on the ground, so you can compare quotes like for like.
